Common Questions
What is Controlled Drinking?
Controlled Drinking is a harm reduction approach for adults who want to change their relationship with alcohol without necessarily giving it up completely. Members develop realistic, individualized goals for reducing alcohol-related problems and improving their quality of life.
Who is the group for?
The group is for adults who are concerned about their drinking and want professional support making meaningful changes. Abstinence is not required. Because this is a therapist-led group, prospective members complete a brief application to determine whether the group is appropriate for their needs.
How does the Sunday group work?
The group meets online every Sunday from 7:00–8:30 PM Pacific Time and is limited to 12 members. Sessions are led by William Roberts, PsyD, LMFT, and combine professional guidance, harm reduction strategies, goal setting, accountability, and support from other members working toward healthier relationships with alcohol.
Is this program evidence-based?
Yes. The group uses evidence-informed harm reduction principles and approaches including motivational interviewing, personalized goal setting, behavioral strategies, and collaborative treatment. The goal is meaningful improvement—not imposing a one-size-fits-all definition of recovery.
